As Kennewick School District prepares for in-person classes, we want to update families on the latest information about safety protocols, schedules, meals, bus transportation, technology, childcare, etc. Please take a moment to review the links below so that your child is prepared for a successful start to hybrid learning and a smooth transition back to the classroom.

As a reminder the first day of hybrid learning for elementary students is Monday, Oct. 19. The first day of hybrid learning for middle and high school students is Tuesday, Feb. 2. 

You will notice that the district is implementing several safety measures and protocols, including daily health screenings/attestations and monthly verification/agreement that must be completed by parents in PowerSchool prior to returning to school.

We want to continue to emphasize that the most important methods of preventing COVID-19 include:

  • Wearing a face mask
  • Maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others
  • Washing hands frequently
  • Staying home when feeling ill

AA/BB SCHEDULES
  • The first day of hybrid learning for elementary students is Monday, Oct. 19. The first day of hybrid learning for middle and high school students is Feb. 2. View Kennewick School District's SafeStart Plan
  • Families should have received a notification from their child’s school that states whether their student is in the A or B group for hybrid learning. If not, please contact your child's school.
  • The A group will attend school in person on Mondays and Tuesdays and the B group will attend school in person on Thursdays and Fridays.

  • Wednesday will continue to be an asynchronous (no live instruction) learning day for students.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Students

Here's a more detailed look at the start of hybrid learning for students in Tier 2 and Tier 3 special education:

Oct. 12: Students in Tier 2 will return to in-person classes two days a week. They will continue to participate in general education remote learning opportunities while physically at school and on days when they are at home. Keewaydin Discovery Center (KDC) self-contained programs will return on a hybrid schedule.

Oct. 19: Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in grades K-5 will return to in-person learning four days a week. They will be able to participate in general education according to their IEPs in A and B cohorts. KDC inclusion programs will return on a hybrid schedule.

Nov. 2: Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in middle and high school will return to in-person learning four days a week. They will be able to participate in general education according to IEPs in A and B cohorts.

Meetings and Evaluations: School teams will contact families to schedule evaluations for students in remote learning. These may require in-person testing. All meetings will be held via phone or Zoom during mutually agreed upon times until Phase 4.

ATTENDANCE

Student attendance and participation is critical to student learning and success. Daily attendance will be taken by teachers to ensure students are engaged in in-person classes and learning on asychronous days. If you have specific questions about attendance, please contact your school.

GRADING

Regular grading practices, policies, and procedures are in place during hybrid learning. Students will receive feedback on their work, and students will earn grades according to established grading policies. 

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

School supply lists will be provided by your child's teacher. If you have not received a list, please contact your child's teacher or school. If you need assistance with school supplies, please contact the school counselor or an administrator.

HYBRID LEARNING INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES 

For those students engaging remotely during hybrid learning, the district has developed Hybrid Learning Instructional Resources to support the students education at home.

CHROMEBOOKS

Grades 3-12: If your child still needs a Chromebook, please come to  the Administration Center located at 1000 W. 4th Ave., Kennewick to check one out.

Grades K-2: The district has ordered iPads for students in grade K-2 and expects to receive them in November. Families will be notified when they are ready for check out. 

More about student technology responsibilities, parent/guardian responsibilities, Chromebook maintenace fees, etc. may be found here. The district is covering the cost of Chromebook insurance for families this school year.

Free Meals for Students at School
During hybrid learning, free meals will be available to students at school during their in-person learning days (either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday). The on-site meals are limited to students who are attending school in person that day. free meals will be available to students until the end of the school year.

Students still have the option of bringing their own lunches from home on their in-person learning days.

Pre-Order Five-Day Meal Kits Available for Everyone
In addition to the school meals served on campus during in-person learning, free five-day meal kits (with food to be taken home) will be available to all children ages 18 and younger for pick-up at 12 school sites every Wednesday during hybrid learning.

Families will be able to pick up meal kits on Wednesdays at any of the 12 schools, regardless of where their child attends.

One kit will be provided per child. The kits will be available by pre-order only. The pre-order form will be posted at www.ksd.org each week. 

The five-day meal kit pick-up sites and times are:

  • Amistad Elementary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Amon Creek Elementary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Eastgate Elementary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Fuerza Elementary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Westgate Elementary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Chinook Middle School, 9 to 11 a.m.

Why is the Benton-Franklin Health District recommending hybrid learning?

At the September 30 Board meeting, Dr. Amy Person, Health Officer for Benton-Franklin Health District , presented information and answered questions from the Kennewick School District Board of Directors.

The district recommends that staff and parents review the updated information on the Benton-Franklin Health District School Guidance, as it provides some additional clarification about their recommendation for schools to move to hybrid learning, and they provide some additional explanation that the metric of cases/100K/14 days is just one of a number of metrics/indicators being used to inform their recommendation.

In July, Benton-Franklin Health District recommended that schools in Benton County begin the year in remote learning. This was based on a number of factors, including COVID community transmission rates. Benton-Franklin Health District is now recommending that schools in Benton County transition to hybrid learning, as early as October 1.

During the September 30 board meeting, Dr. Person detailed that while community transmission rates are not yet below 75, they are within a range that supports students returning to school for on-site learning. In addition, she highlighted that when mitigation factors, such as wearing face coverings, maintaining physical distancing, hand washing, staying home when sick, and cleaning/sanitizing, are followed, risk level is low. Dr. Person spent a significant amount of time detailing information for the Board to consider as they made their decision.

Why is the school board still meeting remotely if children are allowed to return for class?

Last spring, the Governor issued an Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) proclamation prohibiting Boards from meeting in person and limiting action to that deemed necessary for the essential operations of the disrict. The Governor's latest extension of the proclamation is until Nov. 9. School board meetings may be accessed online and the meeting informatoin is posted to the district website the week of the board meeting. Public comment is available and sign-up is between 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. If you want to send a comment or concern to the school board at anytime, they may be reached at schoolboard@ksd.org

What are my options if I do not want my child to attend in-person classes?

The district, in conjunction with the Kennewick Education Association (KEA), studied a variety of options for families to determine what was feasible under the current conditions.

It has been determined that the district can provide the following two options for families:

Option 1: Kennewick School District Online Learning Academy

Students may enroll in the Kennewick School District Online Learning Academy. a fully web-based education program for students in grades K-12.

The Kennewick School District Online Learning Academy is centered around computer-based instruction and individual learning rather than the classroom-based instruction of remote learning.

REGISTER FOR KSD ONLINE LEARNING ACADEMY

If your child has an Individual Educational Program (IEP) and you intend to enroll in the online academy, please contact your child’s case manager to schedule an IEP meeting to discuss this option.

Option 2: Remote Only/Asynchronous Learning

Students may remain in their current classroom(s) with their current teachers.

Students will access the asynchronous learning activities and assessments that the classroom teacher develops. Since the student will not be attending for in-person learning, parents can also access instructional materials to support the ELA and Math lessons that students will miss from the in-person classroom instruction. Grading and attendance procedures for “remote only” students will be the same as for those student students in hybrid learning.

Elementary students will continue to receive synchronous “specials” (i.e. PE, library, technology, and Music) via Zoom.
If parents would like to exercise the Remote Only/Asynchronous option to for their student, please contact your child’s principal to let them know.

If your child has an IEP, the district is working to develop remote services for your child based on their IEP. You can expect further information on IEP services.

How will the district keep secondary students in cohorts?

In the district's weekly meetings with Benton-Franklin Health District, they have provided additional clarification and guidance regarding “cohorting.” By having students in “A” and “B” groupings for hybrid learning, we are cohorting; at the secondary level, keeping that cohort intact throughout the day in a single group is not feasible.

Benton-Franklin Health District continues to emphasize that the five key mitigation strategies highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are followed: consistent and correct use of masks; social distancing to the largest extent possible; hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette; cleaning and disinfection; and contact tracing in collaboration with the local health department, are what needs to be emphasized. Benton-Franklin Health District has updated their School Guidance webpage, and it contains more information regarding their recommendation for schools to transition to hybrid.

How will the district clean desks between student use?

The distirct's standard is for every classroom to have hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, and spray bottles with neutral cleanser available. The baby wipes and neutral cleanser are being provided so students can use them to clean their own desk/work space. We are in the process of finalizing the schedules with the Kennewick Education Association (KEA), which address the time issue for teachers to use the disinfectant wipes between classes, after students clean, as first cleaning a surface helps prepare it to be sanitized. 

How will staff and students find out if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 reported at their school building?

The district's protocol is to notify the entire staff if there is a confirmed on-site COVID-19 case (either staff or student) reported at their building. Benton-Franklin Health District only requires that close contacts will be identified and notified. However, Kennewick School District is notifying all staff and parents of any positive cases at a school and recording those cases on the COVID-19 Report Card

Who is cleaning the bus between routes? Is there enough busses and drivers to support all routes?

Our transportation department is implementing the recommended guidelines from the Washington Department of Health for bus transportation and COVID-related safety. We do have the necessary buses and drivers for our routes.

Is there going to be a staggered start time for students? If they can't move around the building at the same time for specials or recess, how can they safely enter at the same time?

The distirct is not implementing staggered start time for students. However, elementary building principals are implementing systems to keep students six feet apart as much as possible during drop off/pick up. 

Who is responsible for cleaning desks and classrooms throughout the day? 

Custodians will perform daily cleaning/sanitizing of bathrooms, fixtures, office counters, and entryway touch surfaces following the typical morning visitor traffic. Throughout the day, custodians will sanitize other identified/prioritized common touch surfaces such as door push plates, door handles, sinks, water fountains, hand railings, etc. Students will sit at the same desk throughout the day. Typically, students clean up their individual area after meals, with teacher assistance.

Do you have enough substitutes to cover if teachers get sick?

The district has a substantial substitute teacher pool at this time. We are always looking for more substitute paraeducators, secretaries, bus drivers and cooks/cashiers. 

How will Tri-Tech Skills Center support student safety considering that students are coming from other districts for classes?

Tri-Tech Skills Center programs tend to have smaller class sizes with students staying with the same teacher for three periods. The A and B schedule means that most programs will have 15 students or less per cohort.  Tri-Tech Skills Center has large facility spaces for programs– shops, labs and classrooms to maintain social distancing and outside entrances. Students stay in their program area and do not move during the day so there is less intermixing. Students have less scheduled interaction –  students have 4 class/day vs 6 classes /day for a comprehensive high school student. A recent transportation survey indicates 70% of students will be transporting themselves to Tri-Tech Skills Center and not be relying on school bus transportation.

What safety improvements have been made to the Fruitland Building?

The district made several updates to the Fruitland Building before Kennewick High moved in. The new drinking fountains have bottle fillers so students do not have to touch the handle to get fresh water. Most of the old portable air conditioning units were removed in each classroom and the original fan system was updated. The fan system efficiently brings in fresh air from the outside and blows the fresh air down the two main hallways. In some instances, teachers may need to keep the classroom door and a window open, but fresh air moves easily through the building. The district is also equipping classrooms with box fans as needed at the Fruitland building to keep air circulating.  

If a student or staff member gets sick with COVID-19, will the school district be held liable?

The district will continue to follow the recommendations and guidelines developed by Benton-Franklin Health Distric, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.
